Lecithin supplementation in healthy volunteers. Effect on cholesterol esterification and plasma, and bile lipids

Ten healthy subjects ate regular diets supplemented with 7.5 g doses of soya lecithin, taken 3 times daily with meals, for 4 weeks. Lecithin supplements had no effect on total plasma cholesterol or cholesterol esterification; plasma triglyceride and total phospholipid levels were significantly lower after treatment, however. No significant changes were noted in the molar percent of bile acids, cholesterol or total phospholipids, nor in the lithogenic index of either hepatic or gallbladder bile. In vitro cholesterol esterification was linearly correlated to plasma-free cholesterol, cholesterol ester, total phospholipid, triglyceride, and lecithin concentrations, with r=0.60, 0.50, 0.50, 0.57, and 0.45 respectively. These findings provide no evidence of a reduction in plasma cholesterol, or of a change in cholesterol esterification, cholesterol ester transport to the liver, or the proportion of bile lipids, as a consequence of lecithin supplementation.
