Effect of fertilizers and lime on emergence, nitrogen content, and ratio of roots to tops in hairy vetch

An experiment was conducted on Lufkin fine sandy loam soil to determine the effect of nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, and lime on emergence, nitrogen content, ratio of tops to roots, and nitrogen content of hairy vetch. The fertilizers were applied in the drill rows with the vetch seed when the seed was planted on beds. Fertilizers did not injure germination, and apparently superphosphate was beneficial. These results indicate that it is a safe practice to apply moderate amounts of fertilizer in contact with the seed without injury to germination. Application of nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potash produced significant increases in total dry matter. Fertilizers also greatly increased the proportion of dry matter in the roots. Fertilization increased the total pounds of nitrogen per acre in the tops and roots. The increase was greater in the roots and hence a greater percentage of the nitrogen was found in the roots with fertilization.
