It has been shown that the character of the methane carbon distribution in the metabolic products of the obligate methanotroph M. methanica 12 depends on the growth-limiting factor. When growth of these bacteria was limited by methane or nitrogen, biomass yield with respect to methane and carbon dioxide formation were greater than when oxygen was limiting. When oxygen was limiting, 8-24% of the carbon from the methane utilized by the M. methanica 12 was detected in organic exometabolites, while only 1-3% was present in these compounds when carbon or nitrogen was limiting. The polysaccharides, proteins, and nucleic acids in the organic exometabolites of M. methanica 12 were assayed.
