What's ahead in Washington
1979
Federal legislation will deal with energy and nutrition issues in the 1980's. The Department of Energy (DOE) announced business could save 40% of its energy use by better housekeeping (turning off lights and air conditioning), proper equipment maintenance, retrofit of units (insulation), and major renovation of plants and units. Energy conservation is a state responsibility; plans must be submitted for approval by DOE. Building standards are being developed that may become law by 1980. The National Restaurant Association is developing with ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) performance specifications for restaurant equipment. The government may shortly require that food labels include macro-nutrient specifications. Supermarkets and restaurants will be pressured to provide nutritional information to the consumer. Legislation that may affect food prices, the minimum wage, and inflation is an important concern of the food service industry.
