Bone mineral content and growth in very-low-birth-weight premature infants

A prospective study tested the hypothesis that bronchopulmonary displasia (BPD) is a major factor in delaying bone mineralization and growth in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants. The study compared bone mineral content and growth between 16 VLBW infants with BPD and 16 VLBW infants without BPD, matched for gestational age and birth weight. At 12 months of age bone mineral content and growth measurements were similar for both groups of infants, indicating that BPD is not involved in delays in bone mineralization add growth in VLBW infants.(wz)
