Handicapped children learn about food
1979
Klein, Linda
A project to teach mentally handicapped youngsters funded by the Food and Nutrition Service, is located at the University of Tennessee's Child Development Center. Four nutrition units on milk products, meats, breads and cereals, and vegetables are being taught; the objective is to teach recognition of the foods, origin and nutritional contribution, and the number of daily servings to be eaten. Effectiveness is being measured by plate-wastes studies and a series of verbal pre- and post-tests. Study results will be published when the study is completed. Some suggestions for teaching retarded children include: flexibility, repetition, limited lectures, teaching material on the learner's level, and allowing children to experience things for themselves.
