A technical report reviews the current uses of nutrition therapy in hemodialysis and discusses some special considerations commonly experienced in dialysis. Specific consideration is given to the requirements of each of several nutrient classes by hemodialysis patients (calories, protein, sodium and other minerals (K, Ca, P), fluid intake, and vitamins and trace minerals). The challenge of treating patients with both diabetes and chronic renal failure is described, and the need to provide nutrition education to chronic renal failure patients is discussed.(wz)
