With increased throughput in the desulfurization spray column, it is important to enhance the mass transfer to improve the performance of the column. A rod bank introduced to the spray column improves both flow uniformity and mass transfer. In the present work, the enhanced mechanism of the rod bank on the mass transfer enhancement is studied, the field synergy of the increase in the wake vorticity and the liquid hold-up. To meet the requirement for field synergy, numerical simulations of rod banks with varied geometry and operation conditions are conducted. On the basis of the motions of droplets, three operation modes were classified: falling mode, rising–falling mode, and rising–coalescence–falling mode. Rising–falling mode has the best performance, with which the field synergy of liquid hold-up and wake vorticity can be obtained, and this mode can be achieved when s/dᵣ = 0.2 and d ≥ 2 mm in the present work. The field synergy principle is extended from single to multiphase flow.
