Winter storm activity in 2011–2012 and its consequences for the Southeastern Baltic coast

The storm situation of the winter period 2011–2012 is discussed. The formation conditions of the mid-January 2012 storm are shown. This storm was not accompanied by strong, but northern winds, however, in combination with high sea level (more than 1 m), it proved to be disastrous for Kaliningrad oblast. The most damaged were the resort areas of the northern coast of Sambian Peninsula. Analysis of the before-storm meteorological conditions, storm development and the damage it caused on Kaliningrad oblast coast allows the prediction of the effects of similar emergencies in the future.
