A technique to induce spawning and larval rearing of the blood cockle Anadara granosa has been developed by the Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) in 1985. University Sains Malaysia (USM) and FRI have conducted research on artificial seed production of the oysters, Crassostrea irradalei and C. belcheri in the hatchery in 1990-1991. Presently FRI is concentrating its its effort in improving the oyster remote setting technique in the hatchery and at the culture sites. Some biological studies on the donkey-ear abalone. Haliotis asinina has been initiated with the aim of producing spat in the hatchery.
