Management of wildlife reserves in Peninsular Malaysia
1983
Musa Nordin
The steady economic growth of this country during the last few decades has been built mainly on agriculture viz, rubber, oil palm and timber. Tin has been another source of revenue. Recently oil was discovered and has since become the top revenue earner. As a result of the steady clearing up of lowland forest for agriculture, a critical stage has been reached where this has threatened important wildlife habitats and also brought such species into conflict with agriculture. The Department of Wildlife and National Parks has been entrusted to protect and manage the existing protected areas i.e. wildlife reserves, sanctuaries and national parks and to study potential new areas. A number of such areas have been identified and proposed. With this, it is envisaged that the remaining floral and faunal heritage of this country will be preserved for posterity and continue to provide for recreation, education and research for the present and future generation.
