Minéralisation de la matière organique et échanges ioniques à l'interface eau-sédiment de l'étang de Berre, Méditerranée

The étang de Berre, near Marseilles (France), is an inland brackish basin with a high primary rate of production. In 1966, the diversion of the Durance River introduced important hydrological changes. A study of organic matter mineralization and ionie exchanges at the water-sediment interface has made it possible to distinguish two areas, according to the composition of organic matter, mineralization mechanism and ionie transfers. In the North, the high rate of mineral sedimentation leads to a low content of organic matter in the sediment. This organic matter of detrital origin is little affected by mineralization; there is, however, high production of ammonium nitrogen, which is released to overlying waters. Nitrates and nitrites undergo denitrification processes in interstitial waters. The negative oxidation-reduction potential (Eh) of the sediment facilita tes the reduction of sulphates to H2S, th us leading to the release of phosphates and their diffusion to overlying waters. In the South, sediments are rich in organic matter, which is highly mineralized, mainly at the water-sediment interface. The degradation of this matter leads to a high production of ammonium nitrogen, which diffuses to overlying waters and is stocked under the halocline. Sulphates of marine origin are not reduced. Organic and mineral sedimentation accounts for the high concentrations of phosphates in interstitial waters. The remanent salinity observed in the interstitial waters of deeper samples would appear to be a relie of the earlier hydrological system of the basin.

L'étang de Berre, situé au nord-ouest de Marseille (France), est un bassin saumâtre, eutrophe, à forte production primaire. Lors de la dérivation des eaux de la Durance (1966) vers le nord de l'étang, ses structures hydrologiques et sédimentologiques ont été fortement perturbées. L'étude des composés biochimiques et des sels minéraux à l'interface eau-sédiment nous a permis de distinguer deux régions. . Dans la région Nord, qui joue le rôle de bassin de décantation, le sédiment est pauvre en matière organique; celle-ci, d'origine détritique, est peu affectée par les processus de minéralisation après son dépôt. La granulométrie plus grossière des sédiments et leur occasionnelle remise en suspension facilitent les échanges ioniques, notamment la diffusion de l'ammoniaque vers les eaux susjacentes. En profondeur, la réduction du milieu entraîne des mécanismes de sulfato-réduction. Dans la région Sud, l'association de fortes teneurs en matière organique et d'une faible contribution minérale permet le développement d'une importante activité minéralisatrice liée à l'interface. Celle-ci aboutit d'une part à la formation d'ammoniaque qui s'accumule sous la halocline, d'autre part à la réduction partielle des sulfates dans les sédiments superficiels. La présence de fortes teneurs en phosphates est à relier au changement des apports par la sédimentation de matériel minéral, consécutif au détournement des eaux de la Durance vers l'étang.
