On the causes of salinity oscillations in the Baltic Sea | К вопросу о причинах колебаний солености в Балтийском море
1967
Antonov, A.E.
The most important factors determining the long-term and annual fluctuations of salinity in the Baltic Sea are considered. The long-term fluctuations in the salinity of the Baltic Sea are to a considerable extent coupled with the corresponding 2.5-, 4.5-, 5.0-, 7.0-, 11.04-, 15- and 19-year variations in the activity of the Gulf Stream. They depend on the runoff from the continent and, probably, on the sea level. Also, it was established that the main cause of the annual fluctuations in the salinity of the near-bottom and deep waters of the Baltic Sea was the dynamics of the sea level in the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea in the second half of the year. The salinity fluctuations in the Baltic Sea were determined mainly by the salt content in the deep water, not in the upper layers.
