TEMPERATURA SUPERFICIAL DE LA ARENA EN ÁREAS DE ANIDACIÓN DE TORTUGAS MARINAS MEDIANTE TELEDETECCIÓN

"El uso de técnicas de teledetección se ha convertido en una valiosa herramienta para el monitoreo de los recursos naturales ya que permiten evaluar grandes extensiones de terrenos y zonas remotas o inaccesibles casi en tiempo real, y es de bajo costo. Por medio de los sensores remotos es posible estimar la temperatura de la superficie terrestre sin necesidad de tener contacto directo con los objetos, gracias al desarrollo y uso de tecnología infrarroja térmica en satélites artificiales. Los métodos tradicionales in situ son costosos y no cubren grandes extensiones de terreno, además no es posible tener registros de la temperatura del pasado. El aumento de la temperatura global representa una amenaza importante para la biodiversidad mundial, por ejemplo, en las tortugas marinas la temperatura de la arena influye en el desarrollo embrionario, el periodo de incubación y determina el sexo de las crías. Actualmente, la temperatura en algunas playas de anidación de tortugas marinas supera los rangos de la temperatura de incubación óptimos (25–35 °C), por lo que en esta tesis se analizó espacial y temporalmente la temperatura superficial de la arena en el área de anidación de tortugas marinas del Campamento Tortuguero Playa Ceuta, Sinaloa, México mediante teledetección y sensores digitales in situ. Se utilizaron imágenes de los satélites Landsat 5 TM y 8 OLI de los meses julio-diciembre de los años 1993 al 2021, que cubren la temporada de anidación de tortugas marinas. Y se analizó la temperatura ambiental obtenida mediante sensores in situ de los años 2009, 2010, 2019 y 2020. Se encontró que la temperatura superficial de la arena tuvo una tendencia de aumento en las últimas tres décadas para todos los meses analizados, superando los 30 °C, excepto para el mes de diciembre. Los registros de la temperatura ambiental in situ mostraron que la temperatura a inicios y fin de la temporada de anidación se encuentran fuera del rango de incubación óptimo, esta osciló entre los 8.4 y 39.4 °C, por lo que se esperaría una alta mortalidad de las crías. Los años con los valores más altos de temperatura ambiental fueron 2009 y 2019, por lo tanto, se espera una proporción sexual sesgada hacia hembras desde el mes de julio hasta mediados de octubre para todas las temporadas analizadas..."

"Remote sensing techniques have become a valuable tool for monitoring natural resources, since they enable large areas of land and remote or inaccessible areas to be evaluated in almost real time and at low cost. Remote sensors make it possible to estimate the temperature of the earth’s surface without the need for direct contact with the objects observed, thanks to the development and use of thermal infrared technology in artificial satellites. Traditional in situ methods are expensive, do not cover large areas of land, and do not provide records of past temperatures. For sea turtles, the temperature of the sand influences embryonic development and the incubation period and determines the sex of hatchlings. Currently, the temperature on some sea turtle nesting beaches exceeds the optimal incubation temperature range (25–35 °C). In this thesis, the sand surface temperature was measured spatially and temporally in the sea turtle nesting area of the Campamento Tortuguero Playa Ceuta, Sinaloa, Mexico using remote sensing and in situ data loggers. Images from Landsat 5 TM and 8 OLI satellites from July to December 1993 to 2021, covering the sea turtle nesting season, were used. In situ ambient temperature from 2009, 2010, 2019, and 2020 was also analyzed. It was found that the sand surface temperature showed an increasing trend over the last three decades for all months, exceeding 30 °C except for December. In situ ambient temperature records showed that the temperature at the beginning and end of the nesting season is outside the optimal incubation range, ranging from 8.4 to 39.4 °C, so high hatchling mortality would be expected. The years with the highest ambient temperature values were 2009 and 2019. A sex ratio biased towards females is expected from July to mid-October for all seasons analyzed. Validation of surface sand temperature vs. in situ records confirm that remote sensing is a useful tool to understand trends in sand temperatures in sea turtle nesting areas. A zoning of the nesting area is proposed according to surface temperature values over the last three years, showing the optimal zones for sea turtle embryonic development."
