ESTRUCTURA GENÓMICA NEUTRAL DEL ABULÓN AZUL (Haliotis fulgens) EN LA COSTA OCCIDENTAL DE LA PENÍNSULA DE BAJA CALIFORNIA, MÉXICO

"La identificación de las poblaciones pesqueras y la delimitación de la escala espacial a la que se distribuyen, deberían ser de alta prioridad para el diseño de estrategias de manejo y recuperación, tanto de las especies sobreexplotadas y amenazadas, como de las mantenidas en niveles sostenibles. Sin embargo, a menudo las unidades biológicas y las unidades de manejo no concuerdan entre sí. El enfoque genómico poblacional posibilita el aislamiento y caracterización de polimorfismos de nucleótido simple (SNPs por sus siglas en inglés) altamente informativos con un elevado poder para diferenciar entre poblaciones y mejorando la resolución espacial de los límites de la población en varios recursos pesqueros. Además, posibilita el desarrollo de paneles de SNPs para análisis de asignación a la población de origen (trazabilidad), que ya se ha probado en el manejo pesquero y la industria de la acuicultura. El abulón azul (Haliotis fulgens) representa una importante pesquería artesanal en la costa oeste de la Península de Baja California (PBC). A pesar de las regulaciones existentes, H. fulgens está catalogado como deteriorado con sus poblaciones por debajo del nivel óptimo de recuperación. Además, la identificación y delimitación de sus poblaciones aún no se encuentran bien establecidas. Por lo tanto, el primer objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar los patrones espaciales de variación genómica neutra de H. fulgens a lo largo de la PBC y evaluar la concordancia entre las unidades de manejo actuales del recurso y las unidades biológicas. Para probar esta hipótesis, se utilizó un conjunto de 2,170 SNPs neutrales putativos descubiertos de novo mediante un enfoque de ADN asociado al sitio de restricción de doble digestión (ddRAD- seq) en 10 localidades a lo largo de la PBC (n=175). Los resultados revelaron tres grupos genéticos regionales: Isla Guadalupe y las localidades costeras de la PBC dividida en norte (Isla San Jerónimo y Faro San José) y sur (Isla Cedros, Punta Eugenia, Tortugas Norte, Tortugas Sur, Asunción Norte, Asunción Sur y La Bocana). El flujo de genes contemporáneo podría explicarse por las características oceanográficas locales, donde es bidireccional dentro de la región sur, pero con un flujo predominante hacia el sur desde la región norte con un modelo de diferenciación de Aislamiento por Distancia..."

"Stock identification of fishery populations and their spatial delimitation should be of high priority for the design of management and recovery strategies of overexploited and endangered wildlife, as well as those in sustainability levels. However, a mismatch between biological and management units of fishery resources often occurs. Genomic approaches simplify the ability to isolate informative Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) with high population differentiation power, improving the spatial resolution of population boundaries in several fisheries resources. The use of SNPs panels in assignment analyses has also been proven in fishery management and the aquaculture industry. The green abalone (Haliotis fulgens) represents an important artisanal fishery along the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula (BCP). Despite the existing regulations, the green abalone is listed as deteriorated with its populations below the optimum recovery level. In addition, their populations’ identity and delimitation are not yet well established. Thus, the first aim of this study was to characterize the spatial patterns of neutral genomic variation of H. fulgens along the BCP to test whether the genomic structure patterns support the current management areas of this fishery resource. To test this hypothesis, a set of 2,170 putative neutral SNPs discovered de novo by a double digest restriction-site associated DNA approach was used on 10 locations along the BCP (n=175). The results revealed a population structure with three putative groups: Guadalupe Island and northern (Isla San Jerónimo y Faro San José) and southern BCP locations (Isla Cedros, Punta Eugenia, Tortugas Norte, Tortugas Sur, Asunción Norte, Asunción Sur y La Bocana). The contemporary gene flow might be explained by local oceanographic features, where it is bidirectional within the southern region but with a predominant southward flow from the northern region, following an Isolation-by-Distance model. The second aim was to develop a reduced SNPs panel for population assignment that accurately describe the three genetic groups detected with previous analysis.
