Chemical Modification of Fungal Biomass for Removal of Arsenic from Aqueous Solutions
2024
Havranová, Jana | Čerňanský, Slavomír
The manuscript is focused on the capability of the Aspergillus clavatus fungal strain to bind trivalent and pentavalent arsenic species under controlled laboratory conditions. Arsenic biosorption mediated by the A. clavatus biomass was performed using untreated, NaOH-treated and FeCl3-treated biomass of this fungal strain at two different pH values (3 and 5) and various contact times of fungal biomass with arsenic solutions (30-240 min with 30 min intervals). The removal of arsenic from aqueous solutions was significantly increased by the chemical pre-treatment of the fungal biomass resulting in the highest percentage of sorbed arsenic onto FeCl3-treated biomass, achieving more than 80 % removal of arsenic from aqueous solution.
