The purpose of this study was to assess the welfare of laying hens raised for egg consumption, starting from the health indicator defined by the Welfare Quality® assessment protocol correlated with the husbandry system. The research included laying hens (n: 200) raised in furnished cages, grouped in two lots, A and B. Following the indicator assessment – health condition by means of observation, examination and numerical appreciation of bodily areas of the birds included in the protocol, we noticed a higher incidence in skin lesions in lot A (52%) compared to lot B (26%), which was due to differences in provided housing surface; sternum health recorded a higher score in lot A (11 points) compared to lot B (8 points), values that were nonetheless non-defining correlated to the number of birds assessed and did not modify the final result of this indicator overall. Assessment of painful management procedures indicated a lower score in lot A (3%) compared to lot B (29%). Pecking injuries recorded a high score in lot A compared to lot B, due to the higher housing density as well as to the behavioural characteristics of the hybrid individuals raised. Debeaking, skin and leg lesions, sternum and comb health, feathering quality, mortality and necessity slaughtering rates have indicated levels of welfare ranging from average to complete.
