Estudio epidemiológico de larvas de nemátodos gastrointestinales en praderas pastoreadas por alpacas (Lama pacos) en Valdivia, Chile | Epidemiological studies on infective larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes on pasture grazed by alpacas (Lama pacos) in Valdivia, Southern Chile

Con el objeto de conocer la epidemiología de nemátodos Trichostrongilidos en alpacas (Lama pacos) en el Sur de Chile, se realizó un estudio en el predio Teja Norte ubicado en la comuna de Valdivia (39° 48’ S, 73° 14’ W) mediante exámenes de material fecal (técnicas de Mc Master y Sedimentación-Flotación) y de pasto (técnica de Parffit); la frecuencia de muestreo fue mensual, durante 15 meses a partir de enero de 1995. Se utilizaron 47 animales, en número de: 4 alpacas (Grupo A, < de 1 año), 11 alpacas (Grupo B, 1-2 años) y 32 alpacas (Grupo C, de 2 años). Los géneros o especies de larvas infectantes identificadas en la pradera fueron en orden de predominancia: Nematodirus spathiger, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Nematodirus filicollis y Cooperia. Durante el verano del año 1995 se observó bajo número de larvas infectantes. En otoño aumentaron alcanzando el máximo en abril (447 L/kg M.S.). La especie que contribuyó en mayor proporción a este aumento fue N. spathiger, la cual fue identificada en casi todos los meses del estudio. Las otras especies fueron de presentación menos frecuente. Se observaron huevos tipo estrongilidos, Nematodirus, Trichuris y Capillaria. En general, durante todo el período se observó que el recuento de huevos (h.p.g.) fue bajo. En relación a huevos tipo estrongilidos, el grupo A presentó una mayor cantidad. Respecto al género Nematodirus, el recuento de huevos encontrados en los grupos B y C es bajo y con tendencia a mantenerse estable, a diferencia del grupo A, en que es mayor. Los hallazgos de huevos de Trichuris sp. y Capillaria sp. en los distintos grupos fueron bajos y esporádicos. Se concluye que las variaciones en el número de larvas en la pradera son producidas por cambios de pluviosidad y de temperatura, y que las cantidades de huevos tipo estrongilidos son bajas

In order to study the epidemiology of Trichostrongylid parasites in alpacas (Lama pacos), a study was undertaken in Valdivia, Chile, Xth Region (39° 48’ S, 73° 14’ W) based on faecal and grass examinations, during a period of fifteen months, starting in January 1995. Animal were grouped according to the age as follows: Group A, 4 animals up to one year old; group B, 11 animals between 1 to 2 years old and 32 animals more than 2 years old. The most frequent genus or species of infective larvae identified were: Nematodirus spathiger, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Nematodirus filicollis and Cooperia. During the 1995 summer, a low number of infective larvae were observed as a consequence of the low contamination of the grass during the previous year, and to the dry period in the summer months. In autumn, larvae increased reaching a peak in April with 447 larvae per Kg dry matter. The greatest contribution was given by N. spathiger. The other species were less frequently identified. Strongylid type eggs, Nematodirus, Trichuris sp. and Capillaria sp. were observed, few eggs were seen during the observation period. Related with Strongylid type eggs, more eggs were seen in group A. Related with Nematodirus eggs, few eggs were seen in group B and C. More eggs were seen in group A. Trichuris sp. and Capillaria sp. eggs were less frequently observed. It can be concluded that: weather conditions influence the number of infective larvae on the grass. Strongylid egg number are low as a consequence of the deposition of faeces in particular sites
