Evidence for coincidence of meiofauna spatial heterogeneity with eutrophication processes in a shallow-water Mediterranean bay

Mostrar más [+] Menos [-]Substantial influxes of continental runoff from rice paddies flow into Alfacs Bay in the Ebro River delta (Western Mediterranean) at the beginning of summer. The runoff carries with it considerable amounts of silt and organic matter, which are deposited initially in the northern part of the bay. The eutrophication process studied in July 1987 coincided with high spatial heterogeneity of meiofaunal populations in the bay. The level of differentiation of nematode assemblages in the area over a distance of only 5 km was similar to that found in much larger coastal areas. In addition, the eutrophication processes in the bay appeared to cause high meiofaunal concentrations, in particular of nematodes, which, as consumers of benthic diatoms and bacteria, play a major role in the turnover of a large portion of the energy generated
