Acute toxicity and sublethal affects of corn insecticides on predatory earwig, Euborellia annulata (Dermaptera:Anisolabidae)

Maize (Zea mays) iS an economically important commodity in the Philippines. The current recommended IPM integrates the use of chemical and biological control, suggesting a continuous dependence on insecticide usage. Several studies revealed the efficacy of insecticides on their target pests but limited on non-target organisms and its sublethal effects. This study aims to determine the acute toxicity and sublethal effects using sublethal concentrations of three commercial insecticides with different MOA on Euborellia annulata, a local biocontrol agent in corn agroecosystem. Two to seven days old adult female laboratory-reared earwigs were subjected to residual dose-response bioassay to determine its Median Lethal Concentrations (LC50), which were 62.386 ppm (CI 95%: 55.198 60.055 and 129.012 ppm (CI 95%: 117.869-140.447) for Cypernmethrin and Malathion, respectively. Emamectin benzoate did not show any mortality even at twice the AR. The data on subethal effects showed a significant 80% decrease in maternal fecundity of females exposed to Malathion LC30. While 35% of the observed F1 progeny showed apparent reduction in cerci length from maternals exposed to Cypernmethrin LC30. Consecutively, no sublethal effect was observed for those exposed to Emamectin Benzoate. Results suggest that further field evaluation is recommended for the high-risk Malathion and Cypermethrin active ingredients. While Emamectin Benzoate showed no adverse effects and is highly recommended to be consecutively used when managing target pests in corn fields.
