In recent years, deep research methods such as remote sensing and geographic information systems have been used for mapping and monitoring of water areas. In the presented project, the changes in the surface water level and area in the Azerbaijani part of the Kura River from the summer of 2020 in connection with anthropogenic impact and climate change were studied using geographic information systems and remote sensing methods. Experimental results show that the proposed classification methods are able to extract relevant features from water bodies using remote sensing images with high accuracy. In general, the results of the project show that anthropogenic impact and hydrological drought have a wide influence on the surface water variations of the Kura River. The results of the project give some insights into the factors causing changes in the Kura River that can be used to formulate scientific measures and prevent drought disasters such as 2020-2021. Future work may include improving the surface water change detection method by investigating other spectral indicators and comparing them with state-of-the-art classification methods. The extraction of water body characteristics using satellite data plays an important role in water resources research and hydrological drought assessment.
