Ligament injuries in a dog's stifle joint (the canine knee) can be determined difficultly. For most dogs with ligament injuries which need surgical intervention, the best surgical choice has always been one of the procedures which provide stabilization for the injured joint. In surgery, there is more than one recovery procedure. The orthopaedics literature describe three important recovery procedures (extracapsular reconstruction, intracapsular reconstruction, tibial plateau leveling ostheotomy). The TPLO technique is relatively new and is the most important, the surgeon has to cut the bone and change the tibial plateau’s angle. Using geometric calculations the surgeon re-stabilizes the two bones with a plate. The surgical procedures which do stabilize the stifle are referred to as 'Conventional' surgeries, these conventional stabilization procedures have much less risk of serious complications and catastrophic failure when compared to the bone-cutting surgeries TPLO & TTA. After the surgery it is very important to follow the recovery stapes.
