The impact of seeding time was tested for hybrid rye in a yearlong field trial in Upper Bavaria. The rye (one variety) was seeded with the same sowing density at the end of September and at the mid of October, respectively. The impact of seeding time could be observed year-round: the mass growth before and after winter was obviously reduced by late sowing in comparison to usual seeding time. The results were lower plant height and clearly lower plant density in the variant late seeding time. Finally, the yield in the variant with usual seeding time was 27 % higher than by late sowing. Otherwise, the crude protein content, the falling number and the thousand seed weight were higher by late sowing. All in all, late sowing of hybrid rye may not be recommended for organic farming.
