Turismo religioso en Montecristi (Ecuador): Análisis de turistas y residentes | Religious tourism in Montecristi (Ecuador): Analysis of tourists and residents

El turismo religioso es un sector en crecimiento, teniendo en muchos destinos un potencial importante para el desarrollo de la región. Pero para que la planificación turística sea exitosa, resulta esencial conocer la demanda, así como contar con el apoyo de los residentes de la zona. En consecuencia, esta tesis doctoral pretende en primer lugar contribuir a la literatura profundizando en el conocimiento de la demanda de turismo religioso. Más concretamente, se pretende avanzar en la relación peregrinoturista, analizando diferencias significativas en característica y patrones de conducta entre “turistas religiosos en sentido amplio” y “turistas seculares”, ahondando además dentro del segmento de “turistas religiosos en sentido amplio”, en las diferencias entre “peregrinos” y “turistas religiosos en sentido estricto”. Asimismo, se pretende indagar también en los factores que influyen en la satisfacción de los diferentes segmentos. En segundo lugar, esta tesis pretende aportar a la literatura un conocimiento más profundo de cómo se favorece la actitud hacia el apoyo al desarrollo del turismo religioso por parte de los residentes. Y de forma más concreta, se propone y se prueba un modelo para comprobar cómo el apego al lugar de los residentes y el impacto que perciben del turismo influyen sobre su actitud hacia el apoyo al desarrollo turístico, probando además el efecto moderador del beneficio personal. A partir de una muestra de 200 visitantes en la celebración de la peregrinación cristiana en Montecristi, en Ecuador, los resultados mostraron que los turistas religiosos en sentido amplio difieren de los turistas seculares en muchos aspectos. Además, dentro del grupo de turistas religiosos en sentido amplio, el segmento de peregrinos y el segmento de turistas religiosos en sentido estricto difieren también, tanto en sus características socio-demográficas como en sus patrones de conducta como turistas. Además, los resultados mostraron que los turistas religiosos que mostraban más satisfacción con la visita eran aquellos que eran más devotos y aquellos que hacían la peregrinación a pie. Por otra parte, a partir de una muestra de 410 residentes de Montecristi, los resultados mostraron que el apego al lugar de los residentes influye de forma directa en su actitud hacia el desarrollo del turismo religioso, pero principalmente su efecto se produce de forma indirecta a través de los impactos percibidos del turismo. Además, los resultados indican que el efecto de los impactos percibidos en el apoyo para el desarrollo del turismo religioso es mayor en residentes con un beneficio personal más bajo que en residentes con un beneficio personal más alto. Los resultados obtenidos en esta tesis doctoral, no sólo permiten contribuir al conocimiento sobre turismo religioso, sino que permiten también una serie de recomendaciones a los agentes implicados en el desarrollo de este tipo de turismo.

Religious tourism is a growing sector, and in many destinations it has significant potential for the development of the region. But for tourism planning to be successful, it is essential to know the demand, as well as to have the support of the residents of the area. Consequently, this doctoral thesis intends, first of all, to contribute to the literatura by deepening the knowledge of the demand for religious tourism. More specifically, it is intended to advance in the pilgrim-tourist relationship, analyzing significant differences in characteristics and behavior patterns among “religious tourists” and “secular tourists”, also delving into the segment of religious tourists, in the differences among “pilgrims” and “religious tourists in the strict sense”. Likewise, it is also intended to investigate the factors that influence the satisfaction of the different segments. Secondly, this thesis aims to provide a deeper understanding of how residents' attitude towards development of religious tourism is favored. And more specifically, a model is proposed and tested to verify how residents' place attachment and perceived impacts of tourism influence their attitude towards development of tourism, also testing the moderating effect of personal benefit. Based on a sample of 200 visitors at the festival of the Christian pilgrimage to Montecristi, Ecuador, the results showed that religious tourists differ from secular tourists in many aspects. Moreover, within the group of religious tourists, the segment of pilgrims and the segment of religious tourists in the strict sense also differ, both in their socio-demographic characteristics and in their patterns of behavior as tourists. In addition, it was found that the religious tourists who showed more satisfaction with the visit were those who were more devout and those who made the pilgrimage on foot. On the other hand, from a sample of 410 residents of Montecristi, the results showed that residents’ place attachment has a direct effect on their attitude towards development of religious tourism, but mainly the effect is produced in an indirect way through the perceived impacts of tourism. Moreover, the results indicate that the effect of the perceived impacts on the support for the development of religious tourism is higher in residents with lower personal benefit than in residents with higher personal benefit. The results of this doctoral thesis not only allow contributing to the knowledge about religious tourism, but also allow a series of recommendations to the agents involved in the development of this type of tourism.
