Electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) has been proposed as a replacement in hot-mix asphalt. This work compares the physical-chemical-mineralogical and morphological factors involved in the moisture damage of natural aggregates and EAFS. Digital image analysis, aggregate-bitumen affinity based on 3 methods, and evaluation of water sensitivity (by indirect tensile strength ratio ITSR) tests were made. Findings showed that the sample with natural aggregates has an ITSR of 92%, and the samples with EAFS-replacement (coarse fraction) and with total EAFS-replacement exhibit 98% and 100% respectively. Our results suggest that EAFS can improve resistance to moisture damage due to positive aspects of internal factors.
