Introducing Metastability in Al-Cu-Zr Alloys by Non-Equilibrium Processes

Al-5Cu-5Zr alloys prepared by three different non-equilibrium processes, such melt-spinning, inert gas atomization and mechanical milling have been mechanically and microstructurally characterized. Melt-spinning and ball milling processes introduced a high degree of metastability in the material, which presented a high hardness even after thermal treatment at high temperature. On the other hand, the inert gas atomization process failed to introduce metastability in the material.
