Agricultural changes in the western Amazon and the emergence of ecological intensification: can a green economy rise from the ashes of the rainforest ? | Des cendres de la forêt à l'économie verte, l'évolution agraire en Amazonie orientale traduit-elle un mouvement d'intensification écologique ?

Inglés. Deforested areas of the Amazon rainforest in western Brazil have been converted into intensively managed Brachiaria bryzantha-dominated pastures characterised by poor productivity. However, such systems may be spurring ecological intensification, which would unlock the tremendous agricultural and ecological potential of such lands and encourage innovation by local stakeholders. Productivity research, the driver for intensification, has been shaped by institutional and legislative changes that have taken place since 2005. Diverse agricultural practices have emerged, leading to agroecosystems that vary in their degree of artificiality. Ecological intensification has boosted productivity (the number of live units/ha/year has climbed to 1.8-2.0), namely following the planting of Panicum maximum and the implementation of sound pasture management procedures. By effectively marketing products produced by these systems, and controlling access to inputs, it may be possible to prevent the proliferation of artificial agroecosystems.

Réglementer l'accès à ces intrants, valoriser sur les marchés les produits issus d'une intensification écologique permettraient d'éviter une artificialisation généralisée des agroécosystèmes.
