Development of Economy of Sugar Beet Cultivation in Selected Countries

The EU belongs among major growers of sugar beet. The Czech Republic also has a role to play, as it is sixth in terms of its share on total EU sugar beet area. The abolition of sugar quotas has increased competition between producers as well as processors. Therefore, the article deals with the analysis of the costs of sugar beet cultivation and their comparison on an international scale. Russia was also included in the comparison because sugar beet cultivation has become more important there in recent years and Russia is becoming one of major producers of sugar beet. Data from the international agri benchmark Cash Crop network from 10 countries in the years 2017-2019 were used for analysis. According to the results, many countries are not able to cover their costs of sugar beet cultivation with the market price without taking subsidies into account. The Czech Republic is one of the countries with a less prosperous economy of sugar beet cultivation, despite high market prices. To improve efficiency, it is necessary to focus on the selection of quality seeds and suitable technologies.
