Influence of Heavy Metals on Growth and Metabolism of Sugar Beet
2022
Pirselova, Beata | Roszival, Marcel | Kubova, Veronika
Heavy metals belong among major polluters; individual plant species show different tolerances to risk elements, and this tolerance always manifests in connection with other environmental factors. So far, the tolerance of beets - especially to lead, cadmium and zinc - has been tested. Lead, nickel and molybdenum have a moderate effect on beet growth, which at certain concentrations even have a stimulating effect on growth, yield and sugar content. Knowledge of the tolerance of beets to heavy metal ions enables considering the risks of its cultivation in metallically loaded soils and increasing the tolerance of this crop through modern biotechnological methods. However, deeper molecular biological analyses are needed to reveal the mechanisms of sugar beet tolerance to heavy metal ions.
