Marco Paci’s handbook of Forest Ecology favourably surprises for many reasons. First of all because this is a third edition, which, by itself, represents a rather uncommon event among the editorial proposals dealing with forestry-related issues. The second surprise appears at the very beginning, where he describes a virtual walk in the wood, during which some observations and a number of related questions arise. The reader will find an answer to each of these questions in the following chapters, where those items of ecology which apply to forestry are simply and clearly described. The last part describes the functioning of virgin forests, which are deemed as a lesson for the forester.
