Determinantes biofísicos e geopolíticos do uso da terra no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil | Biophysical and geopolitical determinants of land use in State Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

A produção de alimentos para uma população mundial ainda em crescimento desafia pesquisadores e tomadores de decisão para soluções que garantam a todos uma dieta adequada em quantidade e qualidade. Atualmente, o uso agrícola da terra ocupa a maior parte da superfície terrestre, um terço da qual está degradada. Para garantir a alimentação das próximas gerações, é necessário entender como funcionam os sistemas produtivos para melhor avaliar seu ajuste às condições ambientais locais. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o uso da terra no estado do Rio Grande do Sul em relação ao ambiente natural, baseado em atributos biofísicos e na história da ocupação humana do território. A abordagem ecossistêmica com o uso de algumas variáveis possibilitou, com base no conhecimento existente, listar fatores biofísicos relevantes à distribuição dos ecossistemas e com a ajuda dos Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG) integrálos para propor uma nova regionalização. Foram delimitadas 14 unidades espaciais representando sistemas ecológicos ao nível de mesoescala, quatro deles referentes a tipologias florestais e dez campestres. A análise de um mapa de uso da terra e cobertura vegetal mostrou que quatro classes de uso agrícola ocupam 48,7% dos 281.738 km² do território do estado Desse total 22,2% são usados com agricultura de sequeiro principalmente nos sistemas ecológicos campestres em locais favoráveis à mecanização agrícola. 16,1% apresentam uso agrícola misto, dominante nos sistemas florestais, 6,9% correspondem a cultivo de arroz em sistemas ecológicos campestres com solos úmidos, e 3,6% são ocupados com silvicultura. Os campos ocupam 31,2% da superfície do estado e são utilizados com pecuária sobre campo nativo. Florestas ocupam 11,9%, corpos d’água naturais e artificiais ocupam 6,9%, áreas urbanizadas e mineração a céu aberto, 0,91 % e outras coberturas naturais não vegetadas os restantes 0,59%. A observação da flora presente em cada sistema ecológico mostrou coerência com a delimitação proposta, refletindo que sua distribuição resulta da expressão dos fatores biofísicos em questão, o que também deve afetar o desempenho das culturas agrícolas. O processo histórico de povoamento do estado também pode ser observado pela conversão de forma mais pronunciada em sistemas ecológicos florestais do que dos campestres. O presente estudo mostra que uma maior proporção de cobertura de campo nativo do estado está associada a alguma limitação topográfica ou edáfica para uso agrícola, embora possa ter uso econômico com a manutenção de serviços ecossistêmicos. Investimentos em pesquisa podem contribuir para um conhecimento mais profundo e detalhado das condições ambientais e dos sistemas de produção visando um uso adequado ao potencial natural, garantindo assim um uso sustentável com manutenção dos serviços ambientais.

Food production for a still-growing world population challenges researchers and decision makers to propose solutions that guarantee everyone a proper diet in quantity and quality. Currently, agricultural land use occupies most of the land surface, one-third of which is degraded. To guarantee food for the next generations, it is necessary to understand how the productive systems work to better evaluate their adjustment to local environmental conditions.The objective of this work is to analyze the land use in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, in relation to the natural environment, based on biophysical attributes and on the history of human occupation of the territory. The ecosystem approach with use of a few variables allowed, based on existing knowledge, the listing of biophysical factors relevant to the distribution of ecosystems integrating with the help of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to propose a new regionalization. We delimited 14 spatial units representing ecological systems at the mesoscale level, four of them referring to forest typologies and ten to grassland ones The analysis of a land use/land cover map showed that four agriculture land use classes cover 48.7% of the 281.738 km² State’s territory. 22.2% are used with annual crops (soybean, corn), mainly in grassland ecological systems in suitable areas for mechanization. 16.0% show mixed agricultural use, dominant in forest ecological systems, 6.9% correspond to paddy rice on grassland ecosystems with humid soils and 3.6% are used with silviculture. Grasslands cover 31.2% of the State’s surface, mainly used for cattle ranching on natural grasslands. Forests cover 11.9%, natural and man-made water bodies cover 6.7%, urban areas and opencast mining represent 0.9% and other non-vegetated natural areas complete the remaining 0.6%. The observation of the flora present in each spatial unit showed coherence with the proposed delimitation, reflecting that its distribution results from the expression of the biophysical factors in question, which should also affect the performance of agricultural crops. The historical settlement process of the state can also be observed by the conversion of natural areas for agricultural use in a discernible way in ecological forest systems than in grassland ones. The present study shows that a greater proportion of native grassland cover of the state is associated with some topographic or edaphic limitation for agricultural use, although it may have economic use while maintaining ecosystem services. Investments in research may contribute to a deeper and more detailed knowledge of the environmental conditions and production systems aiming at a use adjusted to the natural potential of the land, assuring a sustainable use with maintenance of environmental services.
