Mudanças climáticas e o sistema de duplo cultivo milho-soja em clima subtropical

O sistema de duplo cultivo colocou o Brasil em uma posição de destaque como grande produtor mundial de soja e milho. Este posto pode estar ameaçado em futuro próximo. As mudanças climáticas tem relação direta com o crescimento e rendimento das culturas agrícolas. Além de afetar as culturas individualmente as mudanças climáticas podem interferir na dinâmica dos sistemas agrícolas. Assim, a presente tese tem como objetivo identificar os impactos das mudanças climáticas passadas e futuras no desenvolvimento e produtividade do milho e da soja e as implicações das mudanças climáticas na adoção do sistema de cultivo duplo milho-soja no clima subtropical. Para cumprir com os objetivos cinco artigos foram elaborados, compondo a estrutura da tese. O primeiro artigo busca realizar uma análise sistemática sobre os estudos que avaliaram o impacto das mudanças climáticas sobre as culturas do milho e da soja, considerando os impactos sob o sistema de duplo cultivo. O segundo avalia cenários de mudanças climáticas para a região subtropical brasileira. O terceiro e o quarto avaliam os impactos das mudanças climáticas sobre o milho e soja, respectivamente, cultivados em sistema duplo cultivo milho- soja na região subtropical. O quinto artigo sumariza as informações dos artigos anteriores, discutindo as adaptações e limitações do sistema duplo cultivo milho-soja na região de clima subtropical. Para modelar as variáveis climáticas futuras de interesse foi usado o modelo HadGEM2-CC do CMIP-5 para duas vias de concentração representativas (RCPs 4.5 e 8.5) e dois cortes temporais (meados e final do século). Os modelos CSM-CERES-Maize e CSM- CROPGRO-Soybean, acoplados à plataforma DSSAT, foram utilizados para simular o crescimento e a produtividade do milho e da soja em diferentes condições climáticas. Os resultados climáticos apontam para aumentos significativos na precipitação e na temperatura mínima, enquanto a temperatura máxima só apresenta uma clara tendência de aumento no cenário de maiores emissões de CO₂. Os extremos climáticos de altas temperaturas máximas e mínimas devem aumentar enquanto o número de dias com geadas tende a diminuir. O sistema de duplo cultivo milho soja terá melhores condições climáticas para desenvolvimento no futuro. O aumento da temperatura mínima, da chuva, da concentração de CO₂ atmosférico e a redução das geadas devem ser fatores decisivos para isto. A possível expansão deste sistema poderá mudar a dinâmica dos sistemas agrícolas e do agronegócio nestas regiões.

The double crop system placed Brazil in a prominent position as a major world producer of soybeans and corn. This position may be threatened in the near future. Climate change is directly related to the growth and yield of agricultural crops. In addition to affecting individual crops, climate change can interfere with the dynamics of agricultural systems. Thus, this thesis aims to identify the impacts of past and future climate change on the growth and yield of corn and soybeans and the implications of climate change on the adoption of the corn-soybean double crop system in the subtropical climate. To complete the objectives, five articles were elaborated, composing the structure of the thesis. The first article seeks to carry out a systematic analysis of the studies that evaluated the impact of climate change on corn and soybean crops, considering the impacts under the double cropping system. The second evaluates climate change scenarios for the Brazilian subtropical region. The third and fourth articles assess the impacts of climate change on corn and soybeans, respectively, grown in a corn-soybean double crop system in the subtropical region. The fifth article summarizes information from previous articles, discussing the adaptations and limitations of the corn-soybean dual cropping system in the subtropical climate region. To model the future climate variables, the CMIP-5 HadGEM2- CC model was used for two representative concentration pathways (RCPs 4.5 and 8.5) and two time slices (mid and late century). The CSM-CERES-Maize and CSM-CROPGRO-Soybean models, coupled to the DSSAT platform, were used to simulate corn and soybean growth and yield under different climatic conditions. The climatic results point to significant increases in precipitation and minimum temperature. While the maximum temperature only shows a clear upward trend in the scenario of higher CO₂ emissions. The climatic extremes of high maximum and minimum temperatures should increase while the number of days with frost tends to decrease. The double crop corn soybean system will have better climatic conditions for future development. The increase in the minimum temperature, rainfall, atmospheric CO₂ concentration and the reduction of frosts should be decisive factors for this. The possible expansion of this system could change the dynamics of agricultural systems and agribusiness in these regions.
