Fatores de risco associados a pleurites em suínos de creche e terminação ao abate na região sul do Brasil | Risk factors associated with pleurites in nursery and finishing pigs at slaughter in southern Brazil

Lesões de pleura são comumente encontradas em monitorias de abatedouro-frigorífico, dado que a resolução dessas lesões pode levar pelo menos três meses e muitas vezes o processo não se conclui antes do abate. Por isso, avaliações de lesões pulmonares em abatedouro-frigorífico são ferramentas úteis pois pleurites são causa de condenações e geram grandes perdas econômicas. Pouco se sabe acerca da relação entre a prevalência e caracterização de lesões macroscópicas de pleurites em abate e os principais fatores para a ocorrência dessas lesões no Brasil. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar os efeitos de fatores relacionados a práticas de manejo, ambiência e estrutura presentes em diferentes granjas de creche e terminação de suínos na região sul do Brasil sob a ocorrência de pleurisias ao abate. Cento e cinquenta e nove granjas foram acompanhadas ao abate após aplicação de um “checklist” e descrição de problemas respiratórios existentes para cada lote monitorado, além de características dos leitões alojados nas fases de creche e terminação. A análise macroscópica ao abate foi realizada em todos os animais de cada lote cujas pleurites fossem identificadas e desviadas na linha de inspeção do Departamento de Inspeção Federal (DIF) para exame visual mais detalhado. As lesões nas pleuras e na parede torácica contígua às mesmas foram avaliadas e classificadas quanto ao tipo de exsudato, à localização e extensão. Foram colhidas subamostras de suabes de pleura e fragmento de pulmões para exames histopatológicos e moleculares de cada lote de animais. Os achados macroscópicos e histológicos comprovam lesões crônicas em mais de 82,9% das amostras. Nos resultados, fatores associados ao ambiente de criação dos suínos, como tipo de piso, qualidade de cortinas, número de animais por prédio, nebulização, limpeza e desinfecção e tipo de ventilação, não foram significativos em relação à pleurites (p>0,10). As variáveis que mostraram significância no presente estudo epidemiológico, a maior prevalência de pleurites no abate foi associada a fatores relacionados aos estágios iniciais de produção (creches), indicando que a avaliação de risco não deve se limitar às terminações. Neste estudo, sugere-se que pleurites ao abate têm associação principalmente em estágios iniciais de produção, indicando que essas lesões podem ter a gravidade subestimada nesses estágios e com isso despertar atenção somente nas condenações de abatedouro-frigorífico, e que a avaliação macroscópica da pleurite poderia ser um bom método para classificar as lesões crônicas encontradas (80%) na linha de abate. Além disso, manejos básicos relacionados à saúde, qualidade da água e mistura animal em creches e terminações são associadas à ocorrência e maior prevalência de pleurites no abate.

Pleural lesions are commonly found in slaughter monitoring since the resolution of these lesions can take at least three months and often the lesion is not completely healed before slaughter. Therefore, evaluation of lung lesions in slaughterhouses are useful tools because pleuritis is the cause of condemnations and can be associated with economic losses. Little is known about the relationship between the prevalence and characterization of macroscopic lesions of pleuritis in slaughter pigs and the main factors for the occurrence of these lesions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess risk factors related to management practices, environmental and farm character present in different finishing pig farms and their relationship with pleuritis at the slaughterhouses. One hundred fifty-nine (n=159) farms were followed from placement to slaughter after application of a "Checklist" and description of respiratory problems for each lot monitored, and characteristics of housed animals from nurseries and finishing animals. The macroscopic analysis at slaughter was performed in all animals of each batch whose pleuritis were identified and diverted at the inspection line of the Federal Inspection Department (DIF) for more detailed visual examination. Lesions in the pleura and chest wall contiguous to them were evaluated and classified according to the type of exudate, location, and extension. Subsamples of swabs of pleura and fragment were collected for histopathological and molecular examinations of each batch of animals. Interestingly, factors associated with the environment of pigs, such as type of floor, quality of curtains, number of animals per building, nebulization, cleaning and disinfection and type of ventilation, were not associated with pleuritis. Lesions in the pleura and chest wall contiguous to them were evaluated and classified according to the type of exudate, location, and extension. Subsamples of swabs of pleura and fragment were collected for histopathological and molecular examinations of each batch of animals. The macroscopic and histological findings prove chronic lesions in more than 82.9% of the samples. Factors associated with the environment of pigs, such as type of floor, quality of curtains, number of animals per building, nebulization, cleaning and disinfection and type of ventilation, were not significant in relation to pleuritis since the first analyzes. Among the risk factors evaluated in this study, the higher prevalence of pleuritis in slaughter was associated mainly with factors related to the early stages of production, indicating that risk assessment should not be limited to finishers. In this study, it is suggested that pleuritis at slaughter has association with early stages of production, indicating that these lesions may have the severity underestimated in these stages and thus arouses attention only in during condemnations in the slaughterhouse, and that macroscopic evaluation of pleuritis could be a good method to classify chronic lesions (80%) in the slaughter line. In addition, basic managements related to health, water quality and animal mixture in nurseries and finishers shown association with the occurrence and higher prevalence of pleuritis at slaughter.
