Indicadores fisiológicos e comportamentais de vacas, novilhas e bezerras bubalinas mantidas em sistema pastoril durante a estação quente com acesso a diferentes recursos de mitigação de calor | Physiological and behavioral indicators of grazing buffalo cows, heifers and calves during the warm season with access to different heat mitigation resources

Devido a sua coloração escura, bubalinos absorvem a radiação solar com mais intensidade e acabam se tornando mais sensíveis em criações a campo sem sombra, mas frequentemente esse fato não é considerado em criações a campo. Este estudo objetivou avaliar o uso e os efeitos de diferentes recursos de enriquecimento ambiental sobre o repertório comportamental e características fisiológicas de diferentes categorias de fêmeas bubalinas mantidas em sistema pastoril durante a estação quente. Os dados foram coletados de dezembro de 2021 a abril de 2022. Vinte bubalinas do rebanho da Estação Experimental (EEA/UFRGS) classificadas em três categorias foram divididasem dois tratamentos. O primeiro disponibilizou somente sombra (CS) e o segundo sombra e águapara imersão (CSA) como formas de enriquecimento ambiental. Os animais ficaram no pasto, onde foram observados a cada 15 dias. As observações foram realizadas de forma individual e focal, a cada 5 minutos por 12 horas diurnas. Foram registradas as atividades de pastejo (TPast), ruminação (TRum), ócio (TOcio), se o animal estava em pé (TPé) ou deitado (TDeit), e se estava no sol (TSol), na sombra (TSom) ou imerso na água (TAg), em locomoção (TLoc) e tempo próximo do bebedouro (BA). Variáveis fisiológicas como frequência cardíaca (FC), frequência respiratória (FR), temperatura retal (TR) e escore de ofegação (EO) foram registradas. Os animais do tratamento CSA aumentaram seu TPast. Vacas apresentaram maior TRum e TPé, enquanto TDeittendeu a ser maior para bezerras, e menor para novilhas. Em dias em que o índice de temperatura e umidade (ITU) esteve acima de 71,5, os animais CS aumentaram consideravelmente seu TPé e TOcio, e reduziram seu TPast. Houve correlação positiva de temperatura média, mínima e máxima com FC, FR e TR, além de correlação positiva entre ITU para FC e FR. Diferentemente dos bovinos, os bubalinos priorizam utilização de condução e convecção para termólise em detrimento da via evaporativa/respiratória. O comportamento de bubalinos foi alterado durante a estação quente, sendo possível observar interações significativas entre tratamento e dias de avaliação para praticamente todas as variáveis comportamentais. O comportamento de mitigação de calor foi similar entre categorias. O provimento de sombra aos dois tratamentos permitiu a manutenção das variáveis fisiológicas dentro da faixa de variação normal. O uso de água de imersão foi expressivo, com redução do tempo de sombra pelos bubalinos. Embora a imersão em água seja um recurso preferido pelos bubalinos, o fornecimento de sombra permite a mitigação do estresse térmico por todas as categorias de bubalinas durante a estação quente.

Due to their dark coloration, buffaloes absorb solar radiation more intensely and end up becoming more sensitive in field rearing without shade, but this fact is often not considered in field rearing. This study aimed to evaluate the use and effects of different environmental enrichment resources on the behavioral repertoire and physiological characteristics of different categories of buffalo females kept in a pastoral system during the warm season. Data were collected from December 2021 to April 2022. Twenty buffaloes from the Experimental Station (EEA/UFRGS) herd classified into three categories were divided into two treatments. The first provided only shade (OS) and the second shade and water (SW) as forms of environmental enrichment. The animals remained in the pasture, where they were observed every 15 days. Observations were carried out individually and focally, every 5 minutes for 12 hours a day. The activities of grazing (TG), rumination (TRum), idleness (TId), whether the animal was standing (TStand) or lying down (TD), and whether it was in the sun (TSun), in the shade (TS) or immersed in water (TWater), locomotion (TL) and time around the drinker (Wdrinker). Physiological variables such as heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT) and panting score (PS) were recorded. The SW animals increased their TG. There was a significant difference between categories for TRum and TSt and, cows had higher TRum and TStand. TD tended to be higherfor calves but lower for heifers. On days when the termal humidity index (THI) was above 71.5, CS animals considerably increased their TStan and reduced their TG, increasing their TId. There were positive correlations between average, minimum and maximum temperature, THI with HR, RR and RT. Unlike cattle, buffaloes prioritize the use of conduction and convection for thermolysis over the evaporative/respiratory route. The behavior of buffaloes was altered during the warm season, and it was possible to observe significant interactions between treatment and evaluation days for practically all behavioral variables. The heat mitigation behavior was similar between categories. The provision of shade to both treatments allowed the maintenance of physiological variables within the normal range. The use of immersion water was expressive, with a reduction in shade time by the buffaloes. Although immersion in water is a preferred resource for buffaloes, providing shade allows mitigation of thermal stress by all categories of buffaloes during the hot season.
