Mapping Bikeability of Cities Based on OpenStreetMap

The spatial analysis has been applied on transportation for a long time, however, not much research has been conducted on cycling which is an increasingly popular travel mode. This study aims at mapping the bikeability of the City of Edinburgh, which can be a powerful visual-aid tool to evaluate the cycling conditions. According to the Cycling Action Plan for Scotland (CAPS), this study also has policy implication. An opinion survey was carried out to help selecting the bikeability index component factors and determining the importance of each factor. Five factors were included, namely street network (cycling way connectivity), off-road cycling roads, traffic volume, on-road cycling lanes, mean trip distance to work or study, topography and bike storages, and their geospatial data layers were weighted and combined to obtain the bikeability index based on Weighted Liner Combination (WLC). The result bikeability maps were presented to highlight the high score areas and low score areas on three different scales, namely the whole city, between electoral wards and within electoral wards. The individual component factor maps were shown as well to illustrate the reasons of bikeability scores. The result can support the potential cycling policies and plans to improve cycling conditions and promote cycling.
