The pituitary is a major endocrine organ and produces many hormones important in response to various physiological processes. The maintenance of postnatal pituitary depends on the continuous supply of functional cells by stem/progenitor cells throughout life. In recent years, the research on a stem/progenitor cell niche in the pituitary has advanced remakably. We recently found that Coxsackievirus and Adenovirus Receptor (CAR) plays a role in maintaining the pituitary stem cell niches. In this paper, we review the studies of CAR on its molecular structures and physiological roles.
