Ionic liquids, which are composed entirely of ions and melt below 100degC, are currently attracting considerable attention as potentially benign solvents for many areas ranging from nanoelectronics and bioscience, stemming from their high ion concentration and novel solubility. In this review, we will introduce the synthetic routes of ionic liquids with desired functionalities and the significant contributions to the field of agriculture. Diverse chromic behavior such as thermochromism, photochromism, electrochromism, vapochromism, and pH-chromism, which has potential applicability for liquid environmental sensors, will also be highlighted. It is apparent that variations of spin state (e.g., valence tautomerism and spin crossover) and coordination number in the component complex ions are responsible for the behavior in most cases.
