In Fukui and Sakai area in Fukui prefecture, pipeline irrigation system for paddy field has been prevailing in recent years. Water temperature which passed through the pipeline system became lower than that of open canal by the shading effect. Then, the effects of irrigation time during ripening period on the grain appearance and eating quality were examined for 6 years on 10 paddy fields. In the night-time irrigation, from the evening to the morning in next day, the temperature on soil surface kept lower than that of the day-time irrigation. At the day of the night-time irrigation, the amount of bleeding sap per panicle becomes larger than the day-time irrigation. In yield component, ripening index became slightly improved in the night-time irrigation and grain yield became 2% higher than the day-time irrigation. Grain appearance and eating quality were improved in the night-time irrigation. In the night-time irrigation, the percentage of perfect grain increased and that of white immature grain and cracked grain decreased. Also, the protein content in grain and mido value which showed close relationship to the eating quality were both slightly improved in the night-time irrigation. These results showed that the night-time irrigation is effective for high quality rice production.
