Efectos fisiológicos de la inhibición de la percepción y síntesis de etileno en la mitigación del estrés por inundación en tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.) | Physiological effects of inhibited perception and synthesis of ethylene in the mitigation of flooding stress in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

El etileno induce las respuestas fisiológicas durante la inundación en tomate, pero en elevadas concentraciones puede desencadenar un proceso precoz de senescencia que afecte su productividad y supervivencia. El objetivo fue estudiar la relación existente entre el etileno y ciertos procesos fisiológicos, bioquímicos y moleculares que afectan la capacidad de tolerancia a la inundación en tomate. Se realizaron experiencias en condiciones controladas de crecimiento. Se compararon plantas de 28 días de edad del mutante Never ripe (Nr), con sensibilidad reducida al etileno, con su genotipo silvestre Pearson (PRS), y plantas del cultivar Ailsa Craig (AC) tratadas con el inhibidor de la síntesis de etileno aminoetoxi-vinilglicina (AVG) respecto a plantas sin tratar. Los resultados mostraron que Nr y AC+AVG retuvieron más clorofila y sufrieron menor fotoinhibición de los centros de reacción del fotosistema II. La mayor proporción de clorofila a en Nr, se vinculó con una eficiencia fotoquímicia del PSII superior. El aumento de la energía disipada por vías no fotoquímicas en Nr se relacionó con mayor contenido de carotenoides, mayor relación carotenoides:clorofilas y menor presencia de especies reactivas de oxígeno. En PRS se observó una fuerte limitación no estomática de la fotosíntesis, junto a una disminución de la actividad de la enzima Rubisco. El aumento de expresión génica de proteasas en PRS afectó el contenido de proteínas, especialmente Rubisco. La capacidad de conservar pigmentos, contar con mejores vías disipativas de energía, menor degradación proteica y mayor actividad Rubisco, permitiría una mayor capacidad de tolerar el estrés por inundación en plantas de tomate con menor sensibilidad y síntesis de etileno.

Ethylene induces some of the most important physiological responses to flooding in tomato. However, sustained high concentrations of this hormone can trigger an early senescence process that could affect crop productivity and plant survival. The objective was to study the relationship between ethylene and the physiological, biochemical and molecular processes that affect the ability of tomato plants to tolerate flood stress. For this, different experiments were carried out under controlled growth conditions where, 28-day-old plants of the Never ripe (Nr) mutant (reduced sensitivity to ethylene), were compared with its wildtype Pearson (PRS). In addition, AilsaCraig (AC) cultivar plants treated with aminoethoxy vinyl glycine (AVG) (ethylene synthesis inhibitor), were compared with untreated plants. The results showed that Nr and AC+AVG plants retained more chlorophyll and suffered a lower photoinhibition of the photosystem II. The increase of the fraction of energy dissipated by non-photochemical pathways in Nr was related to a higher carotenoid content, a higher carotenoid:chlorophylls ratio, and lower presence of ROS. The non-stomatic limitations of photosynthesis played an important role in PRS, corresponding to a decrease in the Rubisco enzyme activity. The increase in gene expression was linked to proteolytic enzymes in PRS affecting protein content, especially Rubisco. It is therefore posible to conclud that the ability to maintain pigments levels and to have better dissipative pathways of energy, less protein degradation, and greater activity and efficiency of carboxylation by Rubisco, could represent the main reasons why tomato plants with less sensitivity and synthesis of ethylene have a greater ability to tolerate flooding stress.
