In Vietnam, fresh vegetable and fruit distribution are expanding with developing economy. This study aims to find out the characteristics of Chinese market oriented fresh vegetable producing area in Vietnam. The watermelon production and distribution network in Gia Lai province in the central highlands is analyzed as a case study. The main results are: 1) watermelon production in central Vietnam is expanding from the coastal area into mountain areas rapidly with depriving of soil fertility in new production area. 2) Farmers are gathered and invest together when they start shifting agriculture, but they do not cooperate to sell their outputs. 3) Functions of wholesalers are: procuring watermelons at central region, selection of watermelons which can ship to China and distribute in domestic market, and transport. They don't have storage, and financial functions. 4) Binary procurement system; wholesaler at central region only select watermelon exporting to China, and Gia Loc wholesaler select watermelon for domestic market. Vietnamese farmers strongly influenced by Chinese market because of development of production area and expounded distribution network. Development of farming system and joint marketing system will be needed in the future.
