The aim of the present study was to clarify the structure of problems in the designated area of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) and a policy for its continuation. The study participants were staff members in designated local municipality government offices and the Kumamoto Prefectural Government who were in charge of GIAHS. In the first wave, we conducted interviews regarding staff problems in relation to GIAHS. In the second wave, we conducted a questionnaire survey based on the results of the first wave and analyzed the data using the DEMATEL method. We calculated the serious, central, and causal problems associated with GIAHS. The results suggested that the central problems were the 'lack of an heir', the 'difficulty of maintaining grassy plains', the 'difficulty of maintaining the village' and the 'difficulties of maintaining and vitalizing the pastoral association'. In addition, the influence of relations were clearly illustrated for each problem.
