Breeding of a new asparagus cultivar 'Sanukinomezame Violetta'
2018
Ikeuchi, T.
1. 'Sanukinomezame Violetta' is a clonal hybrid cultivar bred by crossing the female R05R13 and male R05R65 in the Kagawa Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station. The cultivar is tetraploid with both male and female plants, and the spears show early sprout, deep purple and late open of scale leaves. It was registered in April, 2017 in accordance with the Plant Variety Protection and Seed Act. 2. According to the Table of Characteristics for asparagus in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Plant Variety-Specific Examination Criteria, plant height and stem length up to first branch are designated as 'long'. Harvested spears are deep purple, indicating high anthocyanin content, and the number of spears per plant is low. Anthocyanin coloration of the spear apex is strong, and time of spear emergence is medium. 3. Spears of 'Sanukinomezame Violetta' grown under simple rain shelters are deeper purple as compared with 'Burgundy' and show uniform shape. Since spear color is vivid even in the summer/autumn season with high temperatures, stable quality and greater percentage of superior spears can be expected from this cultivar.
