Change of agricultural structure in northern part of Okinawa: Effect of the policy change: Import liberalization of canned pineapple products

The purpose of this paper was to identify change of the agricultural structure and rural community's characteristics, in northern part of the Okinawa where is the main production area of canned pineapples products, under the import liberalization of canned pineapple products. This study utilized the framework of the principal component analysis, and designed the model on the basis of indicators for agricultural structure and land use. The results are summarized as follows: (1) Due to the import liberalization of canned pineapple products, changes in the agricultural structure and rural community's characteristics of northern part of Okinawa were observed. From examining the findings, the results of principal component analysis indicated that 'Decline of pineapple production', 'Possibility of conversion of orchard' and 'Employment structure of farmers'. (2) Some rural communities moved away from 'monoculture' and transformed to respond to the policy change. (3) When classifying the rural communities based on the score of the principal component score, it was divided into five patterns.
