With the growing awareness of food safety and environmental sustainability, organic agriculture is developing rapidly worldwide. This study aims to understand the growth and development of China's organic sector by reviewing the efforts that have been made by the Chinese government to ensure food safety in its domestic market, as well as to develop a strategy to gain access to overseas markets. The history of the three main strategies for sustainable agriculture, namely, Chinese Ecological Agriculture, Green Food, and organic agriculture has been studied respectively. In the latter part of this study, 13,126 organic certificates collected from the Chinese Food and Agricultural Products Certified Information System are used for a statistical analysis of the current situation of China's organic sector. We argue that the diversification of the ownership structure of organic farms provides more opportunities for small-scale producers to engage in and benefit from this sector when the market dynamics have been shifting from largely depending on contract farming for exports in the initial stage to nurturing and sustaining a growing domestic market.
