Effect of probiotics and plant extract against necrotic enteritis and coccidiosis in layers

During outbreaks of intercurrent necrotic enteritis and coccidiosis at a laying hen farm in 2015 and 2016, probiotics with anticipated anti-Clostridium perfringens activity and a plant extract (saponin) with anticipated anticoccidial activity were applied to feed. As a result, death due to necrotic enteritis and coccidiosis was reduced, the number of Clostridium perfringens and coccidian oocytes in feces decreased, and liveability, egg production rate, and 50 % egg production age improved in the treated chickens.
