Effects of tea covering culture on the number of insect pests and pest damage during the second tea season

Recently, the global demand for matcha has been increasing. Therefore, Shizuoka Prefecture is planning a strategy to export matcha made from cover-cultured tea. The number of insect pests and pest damage in the agricultural ecosystem depends upon the region and culture systems, thus a new control system that is adapted to tea covering culture in our prefecture is required. In this study, we investigated the effects of covering culture on the number of tea pests and pest damage during the second tea season over three years, from 2016 to 2018. During 2018, in the covering-culture treatment, the damage caused by tea green leafhopper, Empoasca onukii Matsuda, was significantly greater when compared to that in the no-covering treatment. There were no other effects caused by covering on the pests or pest damage.
