Distribución geográfica de comunidades microbianas fotoheterótrofas en la Corriente de California | Geographical distribution of photoheterotrophic microbial communities in the California Current

La presencia de fotoproteínas denominadas proteorodopsinas en microorganismos fotoheterótrofos sugieren una adaptación a condiciones ambientales variables en la zona fótica del océano. Esta tesis analizó la distribución de pigmentos, específicamente clorofila-a y proteorodopsina (retinal), así como la composición de las comunidades bacterianas y su relación con parámetros ambientales a lo largo del transecto del Pacífico oriental frente a la península de Baja California, durante la campaña oceanográfica IMECOCAL 1911. El objetivo fue analizar la estructura de las comunidades microbianas fotoheterótrofas e identificar sus patrones de distribución de pigmentos en la zona fótica de la corriente de California. Para ello, se cuantificaron los pigmentos y se realizó un análisis de secuenciación de las regiones V4-V5 del gen 16S de ARNr. Se observó que la proteorodopsina está ampliamente presente en la superficie del océano en toda la región de estudio. Los factores que regulan su dinámica son la temperatura, la salinidad y el oxígeno disuelto en bajas concentraciones. Además, se identificaron bacterias del clado SAR11 y Flavobacterias como los órdenes fotoheterótrofos más abundantes. El orden de los Flavobacteriales mostró una dominancia en el área con mayor concentración de clorofila-a. Este estudio destaca la importancia de las comunidades microbianas fotoheterotróficas, particularmente aquellas que contienen proteorodopsinas, las cuales están distribuidas y adaptadas a las condiciones ambientales en la corriente de California, resaltando la importancia de estos microorganismos en los ciclos biogeoquímicos marinos.

The presence of photoproteins known as proteorhodopsins in photoheterotrophic microorganisms suggests an adaptation to variable environmental conditions in the photic zone of the ocean. This thesis analyzed the distribution of pigments, specifically chlorophyll-a and proteorhodopsin (retinal), as well as the composition of bacterial communities and their relationship with environmental parameters along the eastern Pacific transect off the coast of the Baja California peninsula, during the IMECOCAL 1911 oceanographic campaign. The objective was to analyze the structure of photoheterotrophic microbial communities and identify their pigment distribution patterns in the photic zone of the California Current. To this end, pigments were quantified and a sequencing analysis of the V4-V5 regions of the 16S rRNA gene was performed. It was observed that proteorhodopsin is widely present at the ocean surface throughout the study region. The factors regulating its dynamics are temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen in low concentrations. Additionally, bacteria from the SAR11 clade and Flavobacteria were identified as the most abundant photoheterotrophic orders. The order Flavobacteriales showed dominance in the area with the highest concentration of chlorophyll-a. This study highlights the importance of photoheterotrophic microbial communities, particularly those containing proteorhodopsins, which are distributed and adapted to environmental conditions in the California Current, emphasizing the significance of these microorganisms in marine biogeochemical cycles.
