Inglés. The whiteflies are the insects plagues that more affect the tropical and subtropical horticolas zones of the world. In the American continent are plant pathogeny numerous vectors of virus. Several species and biotypes of whiteflies exist in Central America and the Caribbean area. In order to identify the species and existing of whiteflies biotypes in the Peninsula of Azuero, Panama, between January and April of 1999 were collected adult and immature individuals in diverse crops in 12 localities. This zone is located between 7° 13' and 8° 08' of North latitude and 79° 59' and 80° 59' of West longitude. Eighteen samples were taken from which five specimens by each one were analyzed, using the molecular test RAPD-PCR, with a total of 90 individuals. The immature stages were identified by means of taxonomic keys. In all the samples Bemisia tabaci was identified. The analysis of RAPD-PCR revealed 12 individuals of biotype A, 61 of biotype B and 17 without identifying, due to operative errors or differences in the electrophoretic pattern of the previous biotypes. The biotype A was identified in aji (Capsicum annum), tomatoe (Lycopersicon esculentum) and melon (Cucumis melo) in three localities. The biotype B was in the previous crops and zapallo (Cucurbita pepo) in all the localities. The biotype predominated in most of the samples.

Español; castellano. Las moscas blancas son los insectos plagas que más afectan las zonas hortícolas tropicales y subtropicales del mundo. En el continente americano son vectores de numerosos virus fitopatógenos. Existen varias especies y biotipos de mosca blanca distribuidos en América Central y el Caribe. Con el propósito de identificar las especies y biotipos de moscas blancas existentes en la Península de Azuero, Panamá, se colectaron individuos adultos e inmaduros en diversos cultivos en 12 localidades, entre los meses de enero y abril de 1999. Esta zona está localizada entre los 7° 13' y 8° 08' de altitud Norte y los 79° 59' y 80° 59' de longitud Oeste. Se tomaron 18 muestras, de las cuales se analizaron cinco especímenes por cada una, usando la prueba molecular RAPD-PCR, con un total de 90 individuos. Los estadios inmaduros se identificaron mediante claves taxonómicas. En todas las muestras se identificó Bemisia tabaci. El análisis de RAPD-PCR reveló 12 individuos de tipo A, 61 del biotipo B y 17 sin identificar, debido a errores operativos o diferencias en el patrón electroforético de los biotipos anteriores. El biotipo A se identificó en ají (Capsicum annuum), tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum) y melón (Cucumis melo) en tres localidades. El biotipo B se encontró en los cultivos anteriores y en zapallo (Cucurbita pepo) en todas las localidades. Este biotipo predominó en la mayoría de las muestras que se tomaron.
