The research demonstrates vulnerability of local partners to dynamic land use changes, along with cases of innovative practices catalyzed by women, local organizations and rising market demand for forest products. The project addressed the ability of rural poor, specifically women, to adapt to changing forest and market conditions under different scenarios. Participatory research was carried out in four sites in Pará, Brazil: the Rio Capini, Gurupa, Porto de Moz, and peri-urban sites near Belem. The peri-urban sites show locally developed, forest use alternatives with potential for more equitable distribution of benefits and sustainable use of the forest resources.
