The yellow colour of the endosperm is a consequence of the accumulation of carotenoids, which are of major importance for human nutrition and health, as carotenoids are bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity. Thus, grain carotenoid content has historically been an important trait considered in bread wheat (BW) and durum wheat (DW) breeding following different strategies. Inter-specific variability is a valuable resource for broadening the genetic base of wheat for breeding purposes. We present two inter-specific breeding strategies for increasing grain carotenoid content in wheat grain that are currently being implemented in our group.
